Preparation

  1. On a glass slab, triturate liquid paraffin (LP) with WSP by placing a small amount of LP into a portion of the WSP via a recess made in the portion of WSP that is present on the slab
  • Measure out 31 mL so that when you add the LP to the WSP, 2 mL can be left behind in the conical flask and the accurate amount of LP will be in the product.
  • WSP should be weighed onto weighing paper and transferred directly onto the slab, otherwise you lose too much product
  1. LP is then worked into the WSP by a stirring method with a spatula
  2. Continue to incorporate LP into WSP by trituration until all the LP has been uniformly incorporated into the base and a smooth ointment with a light consistency is achieved.
PHR2021: Lab 7
  1. With a spatula, transfer the contents to an amber class jar (Martindale 31 stipulates that LP needs to be protected from light)
  2. Ensure that the ointment is pressed into the bottom/sides of the jar then smooth out the top of the ointment with the spatula so that an even appearance is visible
  3. Clean up the sides/lip of the jar with alcohol and remove excess
